Week 15: Tour 2 Quarter 3

January 21, 2019 | Posted by heatheryarrington

{From Katie}
We had such a great week last week! The scholars are settling into their classes again. We missed the Grant Family! The a few from the upper grammar DI team were about to tour Praise Academy, a private Christian school in a disadvantaged neighborhood. Not only did they tour, but they presented them with over $400 that they made from a bake sale! Then on Friday, the younger DI team (Mary’s Stars) went to Lowe’s to explore different materials for their life-sized pop-up book! Heather, Amy, and I had 13 scholars/babies all under the age of 8 running around Lowe’s…it was an experience!

So many exciting things to tell you!

CSH Registration is open!
Registration is open on the website for the 2019-2020 school year. Until March 15, there is the discounted cost of $70/family. After March 15, it goes up to $90/family. You can register by clicking this link!

Super Saturday

The scholars are hard at work getting their supplies and challenge items ready for the state tournament.

Super Saturday, THIS SATURDAY January 26th – both of our DI teams will combine to compete in instant challenges at Elm Grove Middle School in Bossier City. It’s going to be so much fun! If you can’t come the whole time please be there at 7:30 AM at Elm Grove Middle School and stay as long as you can. The entire competition is from 7:30 AM – 10:30 AM.

Heather is doing everything in her power to fundraise for CSH and to promote our group. We hope the extra funds will help with extras that CSH participates in like field trips, speakers, t-shirts and Destination Imagination.

If you would like to help with the fundraising efforts and event planning please let Heather know!

Daddy Daughter Ball

Our first annual Daddy/Daughter Dance (Ties and Tiaras) will be March 30, 2019 at St. Mary’s of the Pines from 4-6pm. Tickets will be $10 per person.  Tickets include a kid-friendly dinner, dancing, a little craft and a photograph to remember the night.

Please help us spread the word by inviting your friends and family to the event. If we pack the house we can make about $1,400 for our scholarship fund (that benefits all families!)

You can buy tickets on the Facebook Event, on Eventbrite or by paying directly to CSH via cash or check or the friends and family option on Paypal!

Open Houses

We will be having some Open Houses in February and March on Thursdays for families to observe and consider CSH. Stay tuned for more information and for a Facebook event to share with everyone you know!

They can register for more info at this link.

Field Day

We are looking to plan another home school field day for NW Louisiana like we did last year. If you would be interested in being on a committee to help plan this please let us know!

This Week in CSH

History Sentences start out with the Edict of Milan and Emperor Constantine. Our history timeline opens with the Colosseum and continues with the Didache, the Maya Civilization, St. Anthony of Egypt, and Constantine Edict of Milan.  We are flying through time as we go from AD 80 to AD 313!  Here’s an interesting video on the Colosseum.

And one on the Maya Civilization!

Science is a fun one with a discussion and demonstration of rotation and revolution.  So exciting on January 20 to see the full lunar eclipse. Science is great!

Math is about conversion of inches to centimeters and miles to kilometers.  This is a good time to measure anything and everything!  In Religion, it’s all about the 7 sacraments and of course, St. Cecilia.  The scholars complete their Madonna and Child painting this week in Art with gold foil.  In Geography, we continue with the Arabian Peninsula.  Here’s a cool crossword on the Middle East:  Crossword Puzzle Game for Kids: Geography of the Middle East.  Language Arts gives us the definition of the subject and predicate.  I’m glad I can learn or relearn along with my kids!  Here’s our Oboe and Harp music for this week:  DEBUSSY – Music for OBOE and HARP – REVERIE 1/13

Upcoming Community Events

Below are some community events our CSH families might be interested in!

St Brigid Feast

at St. Mary’s of the Pines is on Sunday, January 27 beginning with the Rosary at 8:30 am, mass at 9:00 am and then festivities at 10:00am.  There will be food, dancing, mumming, music, and so much fun! It’s all free so we hope to see some of our CSH family here!

Louisiana Life March

JANUARY 26, 2019
10 AM – Noon
Bossier City Louisiana Boardwalk
540 Boardwalk Blvd., Bossier City, LA 71111

What is the Louisiana Life March (LLM) Northwest?
The LLM Northwest is a chance for the citizens of Shreveport, Bossier City, and areas of Northest Louisiana to stand together for an abortion-free Louisiana.

The event will consist of a historic march from Bossier City’s “Louisiana Boardwalk” across the Texas Street bridge to a gathering in Shreveport’s Festival Plaza. At Festival Plaza, nationally-known speakers and local music groups will lead prayer and presentation. After the gathering, a “Life Ministry Mobilization” area will plug you into all the pro-life efforts in your communities

See the Facebook event here.

Homeschool Day at NASA Houston

A bunch of our group will be making a day trip to NASA Houston’s Space Museum for the semi annual Homeschool Day. The cost per person over 4 years old is $14.95 instead of $24.95-$29.95. You can get your tickets online!

Heather has a museum membership at the MOST Museum in Syracuse, NY. It is $99 for a year and includes 2 adults and ALL children under 18. This museum membership will get you into any registered ASTC (Association of Science & Technology Center) museums in the nation. There are a lot within a 3 hour drive from us and the NASA Museum is included in this list. If you purchase a MOST membership (the card gets sent to your home here in LA) you can get into the NASA Day for free (anytime you want to go). It includes a bunch of museums in Little Rock, Tyler, Texarkana, Dallas, NOLA, and more. Just a thought for larger families that love museums! *SciPort is currently considering if they’ll renew their membership and if they do you would get in free, whenever you want, to SciPort.
